Dwight Gregory Sutherland
Native Son of St. George South, Barbados
Dwight has never allowed his career or personal pursuits to distance him from St. George South — something his wide network of family and friends across the community can readily attest to. Proud of his roots, Dwight credits St. George South for instilling in him the enduring values of family, community, and hard work. He connects with people in a genuine and personal way, understanding their challenges and their determination to create better lives for themselves and their children.
A disciplined and focused student, Dwight’s dedication to excellence led to outstanding academic achievements at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. While at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad, he was an active member of the Canada Hall fraternity and graduated with Upper Second Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering. He later earned an MBA in International Business with Distinction from the University of Leeds Business School. Returning to the University of the West Indies, Dwight was among the first cohort of students in the M.Sc. in Project Management program, where he again excelled.
To complement his academic accomplishments, Dwight obtained a Project Management certification from BIMAP. He is also a Chartered Engineer and a proud member of the Barbados Association of Professional Engineers. His career has been primarily rooted in the private sector, where his strong technical expertise and leadership skills propelled him from Trainee Engineer to Senior Management in less than a decade.
Deeply passionate about youth development, Dwight holds teaching in high regard as one of the most noble professions. He has shared his knowledge and experience as a part-time lecturer, teaching two courses — International Business and International Management — at the University of the West Indies for four years. He also briefly taught two courses at Harrison College, inspiring young minds to strive for excellence.
In the past five years, Dwight has served with distinction in several key ministerial roles. As Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, he championed national youth programs, community development initiatives, and strengthened local sports infrastructure. In January 2022, he was appointed Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance, where he led efforts to modernize housing policy, expand access to affordable homes, and promote sustainable land management. Dwight continued to serve as Member of Parliament for St. George South, maintaining close contact with his constituents through regular clinics and outreach activities. His decision to step down from Cabinet in September 2025 was for personal reasons, but his dedication to public service and his community remains unwavering.
